Why You Must Promote

By: jwilder, 9/21/2020

Promotion is not about ego. It's about making maximum impact with the time you have.

You can live a great life and never need to promote what you choose to do.

However, if you choose to serve others as a business or nonprofit, you need to promote your work.

The word promote comes from the Latin word "promotus," meaning "move forward, advance."

That's exactly what you want to do.

Not About Ego

I used to think promotion was for the charismatic.

Over time I realized, promotion is mandatory. Without promotion you will limp along for years. Maybe even give up on "eventually I will be discovered."

It's not about cool factor. It's not about likes or follows.

Promotion is not about ego. It's about making maximum impact with the time you have.

Promote from day-one.

It Is About Impact

Do you want to make the world a better place?

This is not a silly question!

If there was a help wanted section for world changers, there will be an ad every day. Thousands of positions available! No experience necessary. You only need the desire.

If you have the potential to reach one more person, why not do it? Why hold back blessing, helping, delighting, or empowering?

Be Knowable

People can't help you if they don't know much about you.

Yes, people want to help you!

Some people want to help you by introducing you to someone.

Some people want to help you by introducing you to something.

Greatness wants to share and help others.

If people know what your vision is, if they know what your struggles are, then they know how to help you.

Be Memorable

If you are pursuing your dreams, it's pretty easy to be memorable. You are typically excited to share your vision with anyone.

The trick is to leave something with them that is memorable. Leave them with a smile. Never underestimate the value of making someone smile. It's rare experience.

I was checking out at the grocery store. A guy sacking groceries was joking with the customer in front of me. He said something that I thought was funny. I mentioned that I enjoyed his humor. Of course, he appreciated my comment. He said he was in the wrestling world and he worked hard to think quick when it came to words. I assume there is a lot of talk involved with wrestling. When I left he said thanks for shopping and come back soon to see me again. I love it.

He was memorable. He doesn't even know I am writing about him. This is the proof that being memorable is powerful.

Be Clear

How would you want someone to describe you?

That is what you need to make clear.

When you promote yourself or your business, think about the message you want others to be clear about.

Tell others what you would want them to repeat.

Be Findable

You can't tell your story to everyone. However, You can share just enough.

The rest of the story can be found on your website.

Some People Won't Like You

No matter how nice you are or how much you want to make the world a better place, some people won't like or relate you.

That's normal. It's also good.

Your experiences are unique. You have certain gifts that allow you to connect with certain people. These are the people you can serve.

Finally

Start with your family and friends.

Build and cultivate your connections.

Keep them up to date with your activities.

Promotion is not about ego. It's about making maximum impact with the time you have.

If you do these things, you unleash the power of positive promotion.

It has a ripple effect like waves traveling outward and bouncing back from another angle.

Be knowable. Be memorable. Be clear. Be findable.
